Title or short description:
William Hindshaw - The Wardley Hall skull
Full description:
This is the end plate of a privately published 'album' of photographs, annotated in pencil and ink: an account of a visit to Wardley Hall in Lancashire in 1874, currently in the possession of the Manchester Central Library archives: Special Collections Search Room - Local Studies Reference Library: f942.72, W133. The image is a photographic print, cut into a rounded circle and applied with adhesive to the last page of this gentleman's account of his tour of Wardley Hall and estate: an inked copperplate hand has provided the caption 'The Wardley Skull' (depicting a cranium and mandible set on a stack of books, with a living hand perched atop it), and a pencil annotation has been added underneath which reads 'given under my hand, W.H.' I believe these are the Bendictine relics of what became St Ambrose, who died in 1641 and was canonised in 1929.
