Title or short description:
A collection of manuscript correspondence (93 letters) of Charles Hotham Montagu Doughty-Wylie (hereafter ‘CDW’)sent to Gertrude Lothian Bell and held by Special Collections, Newcastle University Libraries (hereafter ’NUL’). Reference: GB186/GB/DW.
Full description:
The collection of signed Charles Doughty-Wylie’s letters are catalogued and archived at NUL. The letters form a part of the much larger Gertrude Bell Special Collection which itself consists of the correspondence, diaries and photographs of Gertrude Lowthian Bell (hereafter ‘GLB’); this is a collection of national importance. All the CDW letters are addressed to GLB and were sent from various parts of the world; in most cases NUL holds the replies to each letter. The CDW letters form a part of the collection of materials deposited by family descendants of GLB. The fact that the letters are not authored by GLB but were in the possession of Bell family descendants and formed a part of the archive first deposited at Constantine College in the 1930s - the decade following GLB’s death - leads the University to think that copyright lies with any known descendants of CDW.
