Title or short description:
Elsie Gledstanes, image from photo album (women doing a training exercise)
Full description:
An image of women in WRNS uniforms probably a training exercise, c.1918. Black and white photograph, approx 7x5", pasted into photo-album by Elsie Gledstanes. Elsie was born in 1891 in Ealing, West London, and trained to become an artist. However, at the outbreak of war in 1914, she volunteered for the ambulance service in London, one of the first public organisations to employ women drivers. Elsie was just 23 years old. Sadly, her brother was killed in France in 1915, but she continued to be involved in war services. By 1918, she had joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS), serving at Immingham, Hull. Elsie took snapshots during the war, and collected portraits and photographs made by others. She cut out stories from the WRNS magazine that were relevant to her, or other women working in the war.Elsie became a successful artist, and a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
